Abstract

In this seminar, Mazzola approaches some topical issues in the international protection of refugees at three intertwined stages of analysis, and from the point of view of a (realist) international political theory.

Firstly, he will begin with general reflections on the origins and status of the right to international protection, and especially on its politicization and de-politicization. Secondly, his presentation will draw from PROTECT’s and his research on the (lack of) impact by the recent UN Global Compacts to eviscerate the premises of the current crisis in international relations. Finally, he will read the Ukrainian refugee crisis and the exceptional terms on which Ukrainian refugees are being welcomed in the light of the two previous theoretical layers.

Short academic bio: Dario Mazzola is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bergen (UiB), Department of Comparative Politics, and Executive Scientific Coordinator of the H2020 PROTECT Project. He researches the right to asylum from a normative yet realistic perspective, with a special focus on the Global Compacts. He obtained his PhD from the University of Milan with a thesis on the "migrant crisis", and was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Citizenship Studies of the University of Geneva (InCite) through a Cantonal Fellowship. He holds a B.A. and M.Sc. in Philosophy from the University of Pavia and began studying the ethics and politics of migration on exchange at Northern Arizona University (NAU).
